Velvet Hour is a sixty-seat cocktail bar and live-music room off Old Market in Bristol. Doors at six, music from nine, last orders half an hour before we close. The bar is first come, first served. Tables can be booked below.

Drinks

Twelve drinks, made properly, no theatre. Two of them change every month. Beer, wine and a short spirits list are on the card at the bar.

House Six of ours

  • Velvet HourBourbon, black fig, vanilla, aromatic bitters. Stirred, served down.£13
  • Blue HourDry gin, butterfly-pea tea, lemon, a float of tonic. It changes colour as you drink it.£12
  • Smoke SignalMezcal, roasted pineapple, chilli honey, lime. Served over one large cube.£13
  • Corner TableRye, sweet vermouth, dark cherry, orange oil. Big, slow, for the end of the night.£14
  • Last SongAged rum, cold-brew coffee, cacao, a little cream. Shaken hard.£12
  • Paper MoonVodka, pear, elderflower, soda. Light, tall, and gone too quickly.£11

Classics Done properly

  • NegroniGin, bitter aperitivo, sweet vermouth. Equal parts, orange peel.£11
  • Old FashionedBourbon or rye, demerara, bitters. Stirred for as long as it takes.£12
  • DaiquiriWhite rum, fresh lime, sugar. Nothing else, and it doesn't need it.£11
  • MartiniGin or vodka, dry vermouth, your way. Ask for it dirty, wet, or with a twist.£13

Zero proof Same care, no alcohol

  • Garden SourVerjuice, cucumber, elderflower, aquafaba. Bright and properly sour.£7
  • Dark & StillAlcohol-free spiced spirit, fresh ginger, lime, a dash of bitters.£7

Prices include VAT. A discretionary 10% service charge is added to tables of six or more. Please tell us about allergies before you order; several drinks contain nuts, dairy or egg white.

Reservations

Book a table

Tables for two to eight. Bigger groups, or the whole room, write to us.

Booking gets you a table for two hours. We hold it for fifteen minutes past the time you pick, then it goes back to the room. There's no deposit and no minimum spend.

If you'd rather not book, don't. Half the room is kept for walk-ins every night, and the bar itself is never reserved.

For groups of nine or more, private hire, or anything with a cake, email hello@velvethour.bar and we'll sort it by hand.

Find us

Look for the black door with the round lamp above it. There is no sign, and there won't be one.

By foot or bus

Two minutes from the Old Market bus stops, ten from Temple Meads on foot. The yard is a dead end; we're the last door on the left.

Good to know

Over-18s only after 8pm. Step-free from the yard; the loos are on the same level. Coats are hung, not checked.

Lost property

Everything we find goes in the drawer behind the bar for a month. Email us a description and we'll have a look.
